A space for everyone

I’m happy that I was able to spend nearly two weeks with Fundación Talento Colectivo, with Paula, Victor, Margarita, the crazy animal gang of Spike, Ramona, Milky and her kittens and all the lovely people that came to spend some time in the project. The first wonderful thing about this project that I want to mention is how the house is open for everybody.
During my time I was allowed to meet the beautiful group of wayuu women, with their colourful dresses and warm smiles and their lovely children; Zofia who volunteered as well in Fundación Talento Colectivo, young musicians who want to collaborate with the project, friends and neighbours that come by, and so on and so on. Everybody is welcomed with open arms and this group of people with such a rich diversity spend time together, work together, eat together, laugh together.
After having seen some different types of projects that aim to support specific areas, the inclusion of certain communities and development in general, what I found really special about Fundación Talento Colectivo is that the work is based on everybody being on the same level, a vertical and additionally bottom-up approach.
The base is the question of how products of the Wayuu communities can be sold to a fair price while including the artisans in the whole process.

My last weeks in Colombia I've spent at Fundación Talento Colectivo. It's a fair trade organization, which works with wayuu women in La Guajira province in Colombia.
I thought I knew what fair trade was. Just asking more money for a product, so the producers of the products get a more fair price, right? No, turns out I was quite wrong on that.
What Paula Restrepo is doing over here has more to do with attitude (actually more with changing the attitude) then with prices. The attitude of tourists, but most of all the attitude of the artisans she works with. Let me explain this a bit more.
The wayuu people experience a lot of racism: other Colombians look down on them, because they are 'poor', they don't get an adequate education, they are being exploited to sell their bags at ridiculously low prices. When you experience exclusion and racism all your life, and so did your parents, and your grandparents and so many generations before that, it will have a huge impact on you and how you act and feel about yourself. This is what Paula is trying to change more than anything. She focuses on human development, on empowering these women, she makes it clear that the bags are real pieces of art; the change in attitude is about making the artisans more proud of what they do, show them the true value of their work, and show them that they too are human beings who deserve to be treated the same way as anybody else.

YALAYALAA
Zoraida Arpushana, una mujer Wayuu, aprendió como tejer cuando tenía 15 años. A 18 años, tenía su primer hijo. Y ahora, cuando Zoraida tiene 32 años, al fin, ha aprendido como escribir su nombre.
Zoraida lo aprendió en la escuela de formación, en la sede de la Fundación Talento Colectivo en Riohacha, La Guajira. “Es importante estudiar para mis hijos, para mí,” dice Zoraida.
La escuela se abrió en mayo del 2016, para ayudar en la formación y empoderamiento de las mujeres Wayuu que viven en y cerca de Riohacha. Cada miércoles, por tres o cuatro horas en la tarde, profesores en la escuela enseñarlas como leer, escribir, sumar, e inglés, entre otros asuntos.
La escuela se llama Yalayalaa, una palabra en lengua Wayuu que define a alguien que tiene ánimo, espíritu enérgico y actitud valiente.

Ningún proyecto es imposible

Mi primer contacto con la fundación fue a través de una amiga francesa. ... A través de Paula conocí la realidad de los indígenas wayuu, una realidad absolutamente desconocida para mí. En ese encuentro me interioricé de un concepto que había escuchado pero del que nunca había sido testigo: el comercio justo. La dinámica que tienen en la organización con las artesanas me llevó a profundizar en los problemas que existen con la comercialización de las mochilas wayuu y a realizar una investigación periodística. Tuve dos entrevistas con Paula y en un momento decidí ofrecerme como voluntaria. No solo para comprender mejor cómo desplegaban las distintas aristas de la fundación sino porque lo que hacían me generó una profunda admiración y quise ser (por algún tiempo) parte de eso.ningún proyecto es imposible
Y la experiencia fue hermosa. El trabajo que hacen en la fundación Talento Colectivo a través de su proyecto Tejidos Vitales intenta resignificar el trabajo de las mujeres artesanas a través del comercio justo de sus mochilas. La tarea se realiza en conjunto con las artistas, evidenciando un respeto por sus creaciones y una fuerte apuesta educativa.
